A landlord was fined more than half a million pounds for illegal flats.

Hassam Hussain was ordered to pay a confiscation order of £494,314 at Harrow Crown Court on Monday, June 10, for illegally converting a maisonette in Church Road, Willesden, into flats without planning permission.

The court heard that Hussain, who now lives in Canada, had turned the property into nine studio flats without consent from the council’s planning service.

The confiscation order was for the money it is estimated he collected in rent from the property. He was also fined £20,000 and ordered to pay Brent Council’s legal costs of £38,422.
