THE pond in Pinner Memorial Park is being dug up, drained and cleared out for improvements.

The normally tranquil and peaceful spot has been described as a ‘bomb site’ while Harrow Council workers clear out the water, improve the edges and remove junk dumped by litter louts.

Joanne Verden, chairwoman of the Pinner Association environment committee said: “It is very exciting.

“Obviously we are supporting this clean-up, but I think it is a bit of a shock for people who head to the park for a tranquil setting and see lots of lorries and rubbish everywhere.

“It looks a bit like a bomb site at the moment – loads of sludge. It looks like nothing on Earth.

“It will be worth it in the end, though.”

As well as the seven tonnes of bottles and cans that have been dug up, council workers have also unearthed a crutch.

A council spokeswoman said: “Work started last week to clear silt, litter and other debris that has been thrown into the pond. We have also taken this opportunity to repair the fountain.

“The work is expected to be completed by the end of next week.”
