PUPILS at Elthorne Park High School have been given a talk on politics from a man in the know - Labour peer Lord Young.

The peer, who lives in Norwood Green, Southall, spoke to sixth formers at the Hanwell school on March 11 when he delivered a talk on politics.

Lord Young, full name Anthony Ian Young, engaged students in a packed hall as he described his work in the House of Lords.

Al Grant, director of sixth form at the high school said: “The students’ questions ranged from whether we should elect the House of Lords and if the voting system should be changed. Asked by one student if they ever had fights in parliament, Lord Young said that while passions could run high and arguments sharp they all knew they were there to get the best for the country.”

Mr Grant said Lord Young encouraged all the students to be an active and principled part of British democracy, and let law-makers know what they expected of them.

“I'm really pleased that someone with an experience of being at the heart of the government and our democracy took the time to speak to young people. They have energy and commitment to give and a massive desire to be part of our country’s future.”
