Jay Sean, Hounslow's best-selling R&B artist, returned to his roots this week to perform a surprise concert for nearly 400 youngsters in Heston.

The doctor-turned-chart-topper stunned pupils at Springwell Junior School when he rocked up on Tuesday to perform songs from his latest album My Own Way.

Jay, who grew up a stone's throw from the school in Vicarage Farm Road, also took questions from children and even invited some to share the stage with him.

The 27-year-old, who attended Latymer School in Hammersmith, was studying to be a doctor when he recorded his first single 'Dance With You' in 2003.

The song proved so successful he quit medicine and signed a contract with Virgin Records, going on to sell 300,000 copies of his debut album 'Me Against Myself' and score two UK top-10s.

The album reached number one in India, going five times platinum, and he appeared as himself in the hit Bollywood movie 'Kyaa Kool Hai Hum'.

Jay visited Springwell Juniors as part of a week-long tour of 10 London schools.

Julie Ball, of organisers School Tours UK, said the singer loved performing his music for pupils, especially those near where he grew up.
"Jay is an inspiration to young people everywhere because, by studying medicine before reverting to his first love of music, he's shown just what can be achieved if you put your mind to it," she added.
