A half blind pensioner died in a house fire in Mogden Lane, Isleworth, this morning as his neighbour attempted to battle through the flames to save his life.

George Pound, 64, was found dead in his ground floor flat after a fire blazed through his home.

George's neighbour Brian Strutton, 65, was woken at 6.30am this morning to the sounds of George's carer screaming when she arrived at his home to find the fire.

Brave Brian, who retires from the poppy factory on Friday said: "I have never in my life seen so much black smoke and flames. There was no chance of anyone helping him, I tried to get in the house but it was just too hot.

"He was in and out of hospital all the time, he had problems with his heart and was a heavy smoker, I don't know whether that is what could have caused the fire."

Six engines arrived on the scene at 6.50am this morning and it is still unknown what caused the blaze.
