CONCERNS over contaminated pork has forced restaurants in Uxbridge to reduce their menus.

Customers at Burger King in the Mall Pavilions, Uxbridge, were told yesterday that no bacon products would be available.

Subway also confirmed that they had to slim down their menu as a number of items were affected.

They said: "Following the industry-wide issue relating to pork produced from pigs slaughtered in Ireland, the Subway chain can confirm it identified a number of batches of sliced ham, pepperoni and BBQ pork ribsteak which were affected by the issue. The affected batches of these products were immediately withdrawn.

"Unaffected batches of these products are being delivered to stores as quickly as possible."

Tests on slaughtered pigs showed some pork products contained up to 200 more dioxins than the recognised safety limit.

Chronic long-term exposure to dioxins can have serious health effects, including cancer, although the Food Safety Authority confirmed any risk to consumer health is low.
