A 12-YEAR-OLD boy is making an inspirational recovery after he was terribly injured by a security gate.

Ethan Kosak-Hine could spend up to six months in a wheelchair after breaking his leg in multiple places in the accident.

The Taekwondo enthusiast, of Swakeleys Road, Ickenham, who was working towards achieving a black belt, will not be able to fully return to the sport for two years.

But despite his injuries the youngster is determined to raise money for the emergency services that helped him.

Ethan told the Gazette: “They helped save my foot and my life and I want to help them. I’m so grateful to them.

“I remember what happened and I’m just pleased to have survived.”

Ethan, who was 11 at the time and spent his 12th birthday in hospital, was heading off to watch the Paralympics and was waiting outside his house when the gate fell on him.

His seven-year-old brother heard a bang and a scream and called his parents, who together with the children’s grandmother were able to lift the metal and wooden gate off Ethan.

His mother, Maria Kosak, 40, said: “We could see his foot had become almost wholly detached from his leg and the bone was visible.

“My mum used to work in A&E so she was able to stem the bleeding until the ambulance arrived,” said the mother-of-four.

An air ambulance was scrambled and Ethan was flown to the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel, where he had surgery. He spent about 10 days in hospital.

Meanwhile his Taekwondo club set up up a Facebook page wishing him a speedy recovery and held a collection. Pupils from his old school, Breakspear Infants and Juniors, and his new secondary school, Vyners – where he had been a pupil for just four days – chipped in.

A group of friends visited him in hospital on his birthday and presented him with an iPad as a surprise gift. There was some money left over from the collection and Ethan asked for it to be donated to the air ambulance.

His mum said: “He has hopes of meeting the doctor and medic from the air ambulance service. He wants to thank them personally and is interested in fundraising activities for them.

“One suggested idea is a ‘kickathon’, and another is to smash the world record for the biggest outdoor Taekwondo display.

“Ethan had a miracle escape. He wanted to be able to tell his story in the hope that he may provide some inspiration to others.”
