A group which previously had six councillors in Hounslow may not contest future elections after failing to win a single seat last week.

The Independent Community Group (ICG) held all six seats in the wards of Isleworth and Syon before losing them all in 2010.

But Phil Andrews, campaign manager of the group, which was part of the ruling Tory-lead coalition between 2006 and 2010, said it was considering its future in the wake of last week's local election results.

"I am not sure it is sustainable for our success or failure to be dependent upon the ebb and flow of national political fortunes," he said.

"We are a community group which fights elections rather than a full-blooded political party and have the option of pursuing our objectives without being involved in elections.

"That is the option I think we should be considering, with or without the approval of those who have up until now been our political opponents."

Mr Andrews said he was disappointed by the group's failure to win a seat but said it had been affected by the large swing to Labour across the borough.

Despite a fiercely fought campaign in the ward of Isleworth, where Mr Andrews stood, he said Labour deserved its win and had 'strong teams of councillors' in the wards contested by ICG.

He added that he planned to take a less prominent role, while still offering the group his active support. He said he no longer had an appetite for 'adversarial politics'.
