AT LEAST 40 people were rounded up and several arrested during a major operation by the UK Border Agency in Southall this morning.

Around 20 UKBA agents and 25 police officers converged on King Street car park and the surrounding areas to detain people who are in the country illegally.

Police and border agency officers are currently processing those who have been detained and are carrying out checks to determine who will have to be sent back to their native countries.

Steve Lamb, UKBA acting regional director for London and the South-East said: "I think it's been an excellent result this morning. We've rounded a good number of people, probably more than we had at first estimated.

"We have been acting on intelligence for the community, the police and a number of agencies. King Street is a well-known spot for people who have not got the right to be in the UK legally."
