Five cars were seized in Stanmore after police cameras caught out motorists driving illegally.

The vehicles were towed away as their drivers had no insurance or road tax discs.

Police used cameras to analyse number plates and catch the motorists on Uxbridge Road on Thursday last week.

Among those caught were 26-year-old Jeremiah Lyons, of Crofts Lane, Haringey. He was arrested and charged for driving while disqualified.

Two other people were also stopped for driving without the correct documents and two vehicles were reported for being unroadworthy.

Sergeant Vicky Brownlee said: "This was a high visibility operation on a main road in Harrow that's connected to Hertfordshire.

"This shows our commitment to preventing criminal use of vehicles on the road.

"There is another operation planned."

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) was used by officers to detect the vehicles with driving offences. The system, which is fitted in some police cars, takes photos of passing number plates. These number plates are then checked by an electronic system which alerts the officers if the driver is driving illegally.

Lyons was bailed to appear before court yesterday afternoon, as the Observer went to press.
