I am astounded that over a quarter of a million people are claiming benefits because of their addiction to heroin and crack cocaine.

For 23 out of 33 years I have dispensed prescription medicines, and was of the opinion that as much help should be afforded addicts of all substances because I have seen that it is usually the most vulnerable members of society who fall prey to this.

Approximately 12 weeks ago I had an accident at work which could mean that I will not be able to return for at least a year.

I have never claimed benefits until last year, when I had used all my savings to subsidise my earnings to pay my way in the world.

I receive about £80 per week statutary sick pay and just over £50 housing benefit per week. My rent is £700 per month, and I am at my wit's end that I will become homeless.

A few weeks ago, while waiting to provide proof of income at a Citizens' Advice Bureau, a lady waiting in the queue next to me remarked that she had overheard me explaining my situation.

She said in reality I would be offered help immediately if I were an addict, unmarried mother or both, which offended me.

Last week, because I do not want to live on benefits, I visited a job centre to ask for help in finding a more suitable employment.

I was told that they could only help me if I am claiming income support.

I am proud that I want to pay my own way in the world and contribute to society and would hope my attitude is admirable.

Is there any help for the likes of myself to at least train for a job so that I can live benefit free,or is it, as I bitterly suspect, that so much is being poured into the quarter million plus who have everything paid for them?

I am in this situation through no fault of my own, after all.
