There were tears and laughter as over 300 mourners turned out to pay tribute to Hillingdon boxing legend Chris Finnegan.

The funeral was held last Friday at 10am at Our Lady of Lourdes and St Michael's RC Church, in Osborne Road, Uxbridge.

The church was packed to capacity with funeral-goers overflowing from the entrance, leaning in to hear the moving tributes to the former Olympic gold medallist.

Ruby Finnegan, one of his four daughters said: "The service was absolutely beautiful, the send-off he deserved.

"There were people from all walks of life there, it was lovely to see so many people there to pay their respects, it was very touching."

Tears were shed as Mr Finnegan was described as a fun loving family man with a terrific sense of humour who touched everybody he met.

Floral tributes adorned the funeral, with a wreath laid out and placed at the front of the church replicating the Olympic rings.

There were also wreaths taking the form of boxing gloves, from the family, and also from Hayes Amateur Boxing Club.

The funeral was attended by former world champion boxer John Conteh, and a floral tribute was also present from fellow boxing Olympic gold medallist Terry Spinks.

Mr Finnegan died on March 2, at Hillingdon Hospital, aged 64, following a short illness. He was living in Ickenham at the time.

His brother Kevin, who was also a successful boxer, died last October, in the year which marked the 40 year anniversary of Mr Finnegan's Olympic win.

The talented sportsman also won British and European belts and heroically challenged for the world title.

Neil Sherry, of W Sherry and Sons who conducted the funeral procession said that everything ran smoothly and was a touching tribute to Mr Finnegan.
