A HUMANITARIAN convoy is making an epic trek from Perivale all the way to Libya for charity.

The convoy, which includes ambulances, supplies and medical staff, will travel 2,000 miles and is expected to take about six days.

One of the people taking part is Hanwell-based freelance journalist Viv Ellis, who will be documenting the trip. She said: “We’re all very excited about going. The route we’re taking will taking will take us through Paris and Leon towards Tunisia and then finally on to Libya

“The idea came together only a month ago and we have managed to get donations worth £60,000 including five ambulances, one disabled car and one cold storage van.

“Ordinary people have been really generous too. I put out a message on Freecycle and we were able to got clothes, duvets and even toys.”

She said the trip is being organised by the charity Save Life Save The World, in response to an urgent appeal for supplies from Libyan hospitals, as the country recovers from the recent armed revolution which ousted dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Miss Ellis, who has been to the Middle East before, said she was not worried about her group’s safety in the face of any civil unrest. She said: “I don’t think we’re worried. This convoy is happening because we’ve been asked to come and it’s obvious that we’ll be there to offer humanitarian aid.”

“Also, we will have people from Libya with us so that will be a big help.”
