ABOUT 850 people turned out to explore the sky above Ruislip Lido.

West of London Astronomical Society had scheduled three nights of public stargazing to coincide with the BBC Two mini series Stargazing LIVE, hosted by Brian Cox and Dara O’Briain.

Two cloudy nights meant the telescopes were not needed, but on the third evening, the clear conditions were perfect, and attracted a record number of people.

Families and school groups joined members of the society to observe the Moon, Jupiter, galaxies and nebulae through 15 telescopes.

David Arditti, publicity officer for the society, said: “The TV programme gives the subject a high profile, which has helped to make the public keener than ever this year to turn out to see the stars.

“It was particularly gratifying to see so many of the school teachers we contacted taking an interest and getting their pupils to come along, as this kind of thing is not just fun.

“It really can turn children’s imaginations on at an impressionable age and direct them into study and a career in science.

“We’d like to thank Hillingdon Council and Ruislip Lido Railway Society for the help and co-operation that allows us to put on these events at the Lido,” he said.

The next public stargazing at the Lido is from Friday to Sunday, March 7 to 9, during National Astronomy Week. Further details will be posted on the WOLAS website, at www.wolas.org.uk.
