A young man has been nominated for a Gazette Local Hero Award for his prompt action, which may have saved the life of a fire victim.

Chris Egan, 20, of Leaf Close, Northwood, was put forward by girlfriend Vicky Thomas, who is a teaching assistant at Grange-wood Special School in Fore Street, Eastcote.

Ms Thomas, 19, said: "Chris was on his lunch break from Waitrose in Northwood, where he works, when he noticed some black smoke coming from a window of one of the flats in our building.

"He knocked on the door but did not get an answer, so he phoned 999. In minutes the fire brigade came, pulled out a man who was unconscious, and revived him.

"Chris stayed the whole time through his lunch break. He was told the man had been moments from death and he'd saved him."

Ms Thomas said the incident a few weeks ago had made her very proud of the actions of her partner, whom she has been with for two years.

She added: "I am nominating Chris as a Citizen of Courage because he saved someone's life and showed initiative."
