Hounslow today expressed its solidarity with Pakistan and Australia following the latest terrorist atrocity, in which 132 schoolchildren were killed.

Council leader Steve Curran said: "As a borough with a significant population from the Commonwealth, I would like to send on behalf of Hounslow our heartfelt condolences to the people of Pakistan and Australia and any of the victims' relatives living in the borough. We stand shoulder to shoulder with them at this tragic time."

Today, Taliban militants attacked a school in Peshawar, Pakistan, killing 132 children and nine adults, according to officials in the country. Many more people are reported to have been injured in a series of explosions and subsequent shootings at the institution.

The massacre followed yesterday's siege at a Sydney cafe, which ended with two hostages and the gunman being killed when police stormed the building.

Hounslow is home to more than 7,000 Pakistani natives and over 1,000 from Australia, according to the 2011 census.
