PRIMARY school results in Hounslow fell slightly this year, despite a national improvement.

The percentage of 11-year-olds across the borough achieving the expected level four or above in the Key Stage 2 tests dropped from 75 last year to 74.

Nationally, the figure rose one percentage point to 74, according to figures published by the Department for Education on December 15.

Primary school pupils performed slightly better than the national average when it came to English, with 82 per cent achieving level four or above compared with 81 per cent England-wide.

However, they were fell below the national average for maths, with 79 per cent achieving level four or above compared with 80 per cent England-wide.

The Blue School, in Isleworth, was in the top one per cent of schools nationally, with 100 per cent of pupils achieving level 4 or above in both English and maths.

Lionel Primary School, in Brentford, and St Mary's Primary School, in Chiswick, both achieved a 100 per cent pass rate at level four or above in English.

Brentford & Isleworth MP Mary Macleod welcomed the results in her constituency, where she said 84 per cent of pupils achieved level four or above in English and 86 per cent achieved the same in maths.

"It is so important that all children leave school with the literacy and numeracy skills they need to make the most of opportunities in the workplace," she said.

However, she warned the 'excellent' results would add to existing pressure over admissions and said there was a need for more school places.

She said chancellor George Osborne had confirmed Hounslow would receive £13.4 million in 'basic need funding' to help increase the number of school places in the borough.
