I refer to the politically biased comments made by Mr C Hearn in your letters page (Chronicle, July 24), regarding the Conservative Club in Gresham Road.

Firstly, the Conservative Club has no formal links with the Conservative Party, and so to make such an implication is politicking of the worst kind.

The land and the building were not 'handed on a plate', but came as a package agreement in exchange for the club's premises on Alexandra Road - part of the town redevelopment (Key Stage One), as agreed with the (then) Labour council.

After manyyears (18) of negotiation regarding different sites to relocate the club, the Labour council proposed the old London Transport Sports Ground, which had to remain a sports facility.

The agreement covers only land north of our access roadway; the children's playground and open space area being retained by the Labour council for public access.

The club has on many occasions contacted the council over the past months to be told that the developers have not formally handed over this area to the council and therefore they could not carry out the required work.

Like Mr Hearn, the club is very concerned by the state of this wilderness, especially the children's play area, but it is absolutely not of our making.

If Mr Hearn, or any other local resident, would like to pay us a visit they will find that our own 'back garden' is a credit to anygardener, and all this achieved by our committee and members on a voluntary basis.

I trust this clarifies the situation.

DON BARNETT Chairman, Hounslow Conservative Club.
