A SURGEON will face a judge in November accused of contributing to the death of a patient whom he treated at a private hospital in Harrow.

David Sellu, 65, a consultant general and colo-rectal surgeon, faces a charge of manslaughter of 66-year-old James Joseph Hughes at The Clementine Churchill Hospital in Sudbury Hill on February 14, 2010.

Sellu, of Hillingdon, is further charged with perjury.

The latter charge alleges he wilfully made a false statement at the inquest into Mr Hughes’ death on or before October 18, 2010 at Northern District Greater London Coroner’s Court, namely that he viewed the results of a computerised tomography (CT) scan of Mr Hughes at about 2pm on February 13, 2010.

The surgeon did not enter a plea when he appeared at Hendon Magistrates’ Court on Monday and the case was automatically sent to the Old Bailey.

There will be a plea and case management hearing on November 19 and Sellu was granted conditional bail.

It is understood Mr Hughes had flown from Northern Ireland for a routine knee replacement operation on February 5, 2010 and remained at the hospital until he died a week later of sepsis, an illness in which the body has a severe response to bacteria or other germs.
