THE borough is bucking the national trend by becoming a cleaner place in which to live.

Environmental campaigner ENCAMS, the charity which runs the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, has released annual figures which show that the borough has improved its performance in several areas.

In 2007-08 Hillingdon scored 22 on ENCAM's environmental clean-liness indicator measuring the level of litter, flyposting and graffiti.

In 2006-07 the borough scored 35; the lower the number, the cleaner the borough.

More street cleaners, new mechanical sweepers and the installation of more litter bins have all helped Hillingdon Council improve standards in the past year.

Hillingdon is also one of the top five London boroughs for removal of litter in retail and commercial sites, warehouses and private housing sites.

Councillor Sandra Jenkins, cabinet member for the environment, said: "We have been working hard to tackle litter and in implementing measures to raise awareness in an effort to clean up Hillingdon.

"In the next few months we will also be conducting CCTV surveil-lance, and taking action against those dropping litter out of cars."
