A high speed police chase ended in carnage today after a man sped away and crashed into another car.

Debris was strewn all over Castelnau on the southern side of Hammersmith Bridge at lunchtime after a man driving a Volkswagen Passat being pursued by a marked police car crashed into a Vauxhall Astra.

The Passat driver then ran away from the scene but was arrested near by on suspicion of dangerous driving.

The driver of the Astra was taken to hospital with neck injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

A Met spokeswoman, said: “A VW Passat being pursued by a marked police vehicle was in collision with a Vauxhall Astra at 1.05pm in Castelnau at the junction with Lonsdale Road.

“The male driver of the Astra was taken to hospital and the driver of the Passat has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

“Hammersmith Bridge remains closed in both directions and the Collision Investigation Unit is still on the scene.”

Sky News presenter Isabel Webster said the car missed her by an inch.

A London Ambulance Service, said: "We were called at 1.06pm to reports of a road traffic collision between two cars in Castelnau. We sent an ambulance crew to the scene and treated a man for a neck injury. He was taken as a priority to St George's Hospital, Tooting.

Castelnau is closed off and there are serious delays in Barnes, Mortlake, on the Hammersmith gyratory right up to Shepherd’s Bush because of Hammersmith Bridge being closed.

Bus routes 33, 72, 209, 283 and 485 are being diverted.
