A health-conscious Heston primary school has built a new cycle shelter as part of an ongoing project to encourage the children to get fit.

The shelter at Andrew Ewing Primary, in Westbrook Road, was officially opened at a ceremony last Wednesday attended by Hounslow's mayor, Genevieve Hibbs.

More than 20 year six pupils recently received certificates after completing Level 2 of the Urban Pedal Pros road training course, which allows them to ride their bikes to school.

The pupils, who walked or biked to school on the morning of the opening, were rewarded for their efforts by receiving a free healthy breakfast at school.

Head teacher Margaret Williams said: "The children and staff are excited about the new initiatives and hope it will continue to raise the profile of exercise and importance of healthy living."

The school held a Let's Get Healthy month over October and is continuing with its drive by offering a weekly 'WOW' project where the children walk from home on Wednesdays.

It also plans to offer free scooters to younger children so that they too can get to school in style.

They will also be issued with a reflective jacket to keep them safe on the roads.
