Primary school children are aiming to be the computer programmers of the future after creating their own video games.

A group of ten and 11-year-old pupils at Minet Junior School in Avondale Drive, Hayes , took part in a workshop with education technology specialists ComputerXplorers Middlesex.

Using Xbox game controllers, pupils designed and created a range of worlds and characters, controlling the characters’ movement, sound and vision using an intuitive programming language.

“It’s the perfect way of building programming into the computing curriculum for primary school children,” ComputerXplorers owner Deven Ratneshwar said.

Since September, primary schools across the country now teach computing classes with the emphasis on how to code and programme, as part of Education Secretary Michael Gove’s sweeping curriculum changes.

ICT coordinator, Mr MacDougal, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the children. With the help of ComputerXplorers we are ensuring that our pupils develop an early understanding of technology and how to use it in everyday learning.

“Working together allows us to smoothly introduce the new computing curriculum and we welcome the opportunity to give our children a taste of things to come.”
