ELDERLY Hayes residents have criticised Hillingdon Council for failing to repair a footpath outside their sheltered housing which they say is dangerous.

The tenants say the pavement out-side Woodforde Court, in St Peter's Way, Hayes, is so uneven one man has already fallen out of his wheelchair.

Walter Brett, the manager at Woodforde Court, says he last reported the issue to Hillingdon Council on April 28 but nothing has yet been done. But the council denies this, and says some repairs have been made.

Mr Brett said: "When I last spoke to them they said they had it in hand, but it's now well over 20 days and sooner or later an elderly resident will end up falling there and hurting themselves.

"It's just not acceptable. It's been like this for about a year and we have people in their 80s and 90s, and many of them have problems with every step they take anyway."

Resident Evelyn Tinson, 79, said: "It's dangerous because many of us use tripods (three-legged walking sticks) and there are two large dips in the footpaths that we can't safely walk past. A little while ago my hus-band even fell off his wheelchair. Luckily I was with him but otherwise it could have been a bad accident.

"But the council haven't even both-ered to come down here and see it. It's even dangerous for those who can walk, and you would think the council would make it a priority."

Mary Worrall, head of highways and green spaces at the council, said: "We responded promptly to repair a number of damaged areas of highway in St Peter's Way after a request was made by a resident.

"Since then we have been asked to look again at the highway as the resident has raised some further issues. We have already arranged to meet with the resident to discuss these."
