A NOVELTY pop band hopes its Olympics-themed single will create a dance craze.

Cheese Party is made up of swimming instructor Neil Sullivan and Ian Robinson, who was in 1980s band Black Lace.

Last week, they released Champions, a feel-good audience participation song with a routine centred on the different sports at the Games.

Mr Sullivan, 30, from Hayes, said: “I had the idea for the song last year, but we only got around to writing it in the last few months.

“We had to rewrite it twice because of copyright issues. We couldn’t even mention Team GB.”

The tune, which calls on partygoers to ‘row a boat’, ‘throw a discus’, and ‘sprint for the finish line’, is already a firm favourite at Pontins holiday parks across the country, according to Neil.

The song’s video, which also features Bluecoat entertainers from the Southport camp, was posted on YouTube on Tuesday last week.

The clip has been ‘monetised’ – an option for site users, which allows YouTube to place adverts on the video in return for a small payment for each time it is watched.

The profits made in this way will go to Marie Curie Cancer Care. Mr Sullivan is calling on people to film themselves doing the routine, post them online and generate revenue for the charity in the same way.

“We have contacted radio stations because we want them to get behind us,” he said. “We need people to tell all their friends get their own versions online so we can raise as much as possible.”

The track is also available to download on iTunes.

This is not the first time Mr Sullivan, who uses the name DJ Neil Phillips, has attempted to break into the music business.

In 2010, in the run-up to the world cup, he teamed up with Black Lace’s Dene Michaels for We Are The England Fans, with the proceeds going to the Help For Heroes forces charity.

He was also a winner at the Gazette’s Local Heroes Awards last month, taking the Fabulous Fundraiser category for his tireless efforts and crazy stunts to raise money for good causes.
