A HARROW student who was selected for a unique internship in America's capital will also lend her expertise to charities in the Harrow borough.

Meera Kotak, a recent graduate from Hatch End High School, was one of just five London based students awarded with an eight-week paid summer internship at youth-led charity Furureversity thanks to Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

She has already been given the chance to take part in a student leadership summit in Washington DC as a result of the selection and speaking after the opportunity she said: “I feel privileged to have been chosen as a Bank of America Student Leader and am so lucky to have attended the summit in Washington.

"The programme has given me a new perspective on community leadership and I look forward to start putting everything I’ve learnt into practice at my internship and in future endeavours.”

The Neighbourhood Excellence Initiative Student Leaders programme rewards students for their passion and commitment to improving their local community by connecting them with local charities in need of vital resources and Jonathan Moulds, president of Bank of America Merrill Lynch in Europe added: "Our Student Leaders programme helps match civic-minded young people with charitable organisations in need of extra resources.

“At our company, we strongly believe that an investment in future leaders plays a pivotal role in revitalising our communities. "Through this initiative, we’re equipping young people in London with invaluable learning and professional development experiences, and at the same time helping to create a culture of social responsibility in our own local community.”

As part of the eight week internship Meera will learn valuable leadership skills at Futureversity where she will manage development courses for 11-25 year olds.

The Student Leaders programme is part of Bank of America’s signature philanthropic initiative that recognises the service and leadership of charitable organisations, local heroes and student leaders working to improve their communities.

Each year, the company celebrates the achievements of five outstanding students in 45 cities around the world, who have demonstrated a commitment to volunteering in their local community, by offering them a paid internship and leadership development training.
