The Mayor of Harrow joined Muslim worshippers at The Salaam Centre as they broke fast on the second day of Ramadan.

Councillor Ajay Maru dropped into the centre in Pinner Road, North Harrow, on Monday evening where he spent time with members of the wider community breaking fast at sunset.

He spoke about the positive contribution faith-based communities can make to society, and the importance of working together and being inclusive.

The Hindu mayor also charmed members with a few sentences in Swahili, and accepted a donation from the centre to kids' charity Coram - his chosen charity for the year.

The holy month of Ramadan sees Muslims around the world fasting between dawn and sunset.
The Salaam Centre, which is currently under construction, will be the first-of-its-kind Muslim community centre. It will include a sports hall, multimedia room, prayer area and restaurant.

This week's event with the Mayor took place in temporary premises being used until the centre is fully opened in December 2016.
