A DOCUMENTARY on substandard care offered to a Harrow pensioner will be televised – eight months after the Harrow Observer told her story.

BBC's Panaroma team went undercover at a number of care providers across the country, including Care UK, which is commissioned by Harrow Council.

Great-grandmother Ivy Bellamy, one of the case studies in tonight's programme, was in their care in July last year when she was left battered and bruised after being hit in the face with a hoist.

The 97-year-old then spent another 12 days in Northwick Park Hospital after a second blunder.

In the documentary it is revealed that Care UK has 48 care contracts with local authorities, mainly in England, looking after 15,000 elderly clients.

It lost a contract in January with Hertfordshire County Council worth 2.4 million pounds a year following almost two thousand complaints but retained its contract with Harrow.

And in response to two months undercover work by the Beeb a Care UK spokesman responded: ""Care UK takes its responsibilities as a care provider extremely seriously and we seek at all times to deliver the highest quality of care.

For these reasons we are sorry that our performance fell below our usual high standards in some cases and we have apologized publicly and privately where appropriate."
