A Harrow woman has received an MBE for her outstanding contribution to equality and diversity.

Rimla Akhtar, chair of Muslim Women's Sport Foundation, spearheads the organisation's work in raising awareness and providing sporting opportunities for women, in particular those from ethnic minority communities.

As part of this year's Queen's Birthday Honours list, Rimla has received an MBE for her work with the foundation and promoting equality and diversity.

Speaking to getwestlondon this week, she said: “Honestly I was shocked when I found out, I wasn't expecting it at all.

“I feel like I'm at the beginning of my journey - to receive this honour is such an amazing feeling.

“It's nice to see what myself and my colleagues are doing is appreciated and important."

The organisation works at bringing the playing field to the boardroom, bringing people together, Rimla said.

She also co-founded The Listening Service, an organisation that provides mental health awareness and support for all women, with a particular focus on women from minority communities.

“I feel like I've got massive support behind me, but this should be for everyone involved not just for me,” she added.
