A HAPPY couple’s wedding day has been featured on a TV programme about multicultural Britain.
When Alan Haines, 29, proposed on a bench by the London Eye on his seventh anniversary with Anjana Solanki, 26, he did not think the whole country would watch them marry two years later.
BBC documentary series A Very British Wedding examines how weddings have evolved in the UK and follows several couples from different cultures on the journey to their wedding day.
Alan and Anjana had two weddings and were filmed at their Hindu ceremony at the Hare Krishna Temple, in Watford, for an episode, which was screened on BBC2 yesterday (Wednesday).
Anjana, a legal editor from Wealdstone, said: “I think the BBC followed us because we are a mixed race couple and we were having a Hindu wedding.
“I don’t quite understand the title of the programme because the Hindu wedding was not British at all, but maybe that’s the point; there are so many different varieties of weddings now.”
Alan, an operations assistant, met Anjana at Staffordshire University while they were both studying journalism and English.
They had a registry office wedding last summer in Wiltshire, followed by the Hindu ceremony a month later.
She said: “We had two weddings because I am Hindu and Alan is English, so we decided that to keep our family and friends happy we would have two weddings, one month apart.
“My family are religious and they would have not considered us married if we had just got married in the registry office in Wiltshire.
“I like the fact we had two weddings, it kept everyone happy and it was two celebrations of our marriage.
“It was great for me, I mean which girl doesn’t want to wear two wedding dresses?”
She added: “Obviously we were a bit nervous and I think my husband was much more nervous than I was, but it was fun and the wedding was amazing, I loved it.”
Other weddings in the series have included couples from Sikh, Jewish and eastern European backgrounds.
