Harrow Council has been awarded the Investors in People Gold standard, an award which puts the authority into the top tier of employers with regard to staff care.

The authority's 600-strong resources department, which manages council tax payments alongside working with local business and communications, was given the award this month, celebrating how it treats its staff.

Paul Devoy, head of Investors in People, said: “We’d like to congratulate Harrow Council on its Gold standard.

“Such a high level of accreditation is the sign of great people management practice, and demonstrates a commitment to staff development and shows an organisation committed to being the very best it can be. Harrow Council should be extremely proud of its achievement.”

Investors in People is an accreditation for business improvement through people management.

The authority was recently cleared in an investigation into institutional racism following complaints from disgruntled councillors who were voted out during the council elections in May.

Tom Whiting, Harrow Council’s corporate director for resources, said: “We set the ambition two years ago as a team to achieve this standard.

“We knew we were going to go through a difficult time for staff, and we wanted to check against a recognised external standard that we were supporting our staff in the best way possible’
