Staff at Dogs Trust Harefield are hoping potential dog owners have their hearts set on a leggy lurcher or a graceful greyhound as their rehoming centre "is full to the rafters" with them.

Six greyhounds - all ex-racers - and four lurchers are currently residents at the kennels.

They can be found ambling around on leisurely walks, snuggling up on a cosy duvet, or enjoying an afternoon snooze; three favourite hobbies of these laid-back and affectionate breeds.

Richard Moore, rehoming centre manager, thinks greyhounds and lurchers are wonderful dogs.

He said: “People are often put off by their size but breeds such as these are very gentle, hugely sociable and appreciative of human affection. They are also generally excellent with children.

"The six greyhounds and four lurchers we currently care for are absolutely adored by our dedicated kennel staff and will make exceptional pets!

“It is a huge misconception that greyhounds need lots of exercise – the complete opposite is true! They are actually quite lazy creatures and will need only a couple of short walks a day.”

Five-year-old Wiggins is a sweet-natured boy with a sensitive soul looking for a calm home that will give him time to settle in. He would like to live with another dog in his new home and can live with children aged 14 and over. He’s house trained and would make a wonderful addition to a quiet family home.

Brilliant Bobby is an excellent candidate for first-time dog owners. Straight from the racing track he’s on the look-out for a slower paced life with loving owners. A large garden for him to play in and a snuggly bed for sleeping is a must for five-year-old Bobby. He’s a gorgeous, gentle giant and can live with children aged ten and upwards.

Seven-year-old Kenny is a friendly and loving boy who gets on well with everyone he meets. He loves lots of cuddles and would like to live with another dog as he’s such a soppy soul. Kenny would like a garden to roam around in and a snuggly bed to rest his paws. He can live with children aged ten and over and would like his owners to be around for the majority of the time while he settles in.

Davina is a lovely lady who has really come out of her shell recently. She loves the company of people and other dogs and will happily live with another pet in her new home. Eleven-year-old Rocky is a lovely older boy looking for a caring retirement home. He’s an absolute sweetheart who adores cuddles and walks with his canine carers. Rocky doesn’t like being left alone at night and would love to find an owner who will let him sleep in their room. A home without stairs would be ideal for Rocky as doesn’t cope too well with them. Lots of home comforts including a cosy bed will suit Rocky and he can live with another pet in the home. Rocky would like a home with a garden he can potter around in and children aged eight and over.

Playful Rhana is a sweet-natured dog who loves playing with her ball and going out on walks. She’s a real sweetheart and loves lots of fuss and cuddles, so much so that she doesn’t really like being left on her own, so an owner who spends the majority of their time at home is a must for Rhana. She would also like to live with another dog and be given time to settle into her new place. She can live with children aged seven and older and would prefer a quiet home away from loud noises.
