Children rounded off their school's centenary celebrations with a tea party and a slice of birthday cake.

Five days of events last week culminated in Friday's bash at Vaughan Nursery, First and Middle School, in Vaughan Road, West Harrow.

Chairwoman of the governing body Kay Rundle said: "The children had a fantastic time and have learned so much about the history of the school."

The celebrations began on Monday last week when the Mayor of Harrow Councillor John Nickolay and his wife planted a commemorative tree in the school grounds.

Children simultaneously buried a time capsule containing examples of their work and samples of their uniform.

Mrs Rundle said: "Wednesday was a great evening. We opened the school up to former pupils - pupils from before 1975 - and we had about 300 people come, ranging from those who had left in the 1970s to somebody who had attended the school in 1925.

"It turned into a bit of reunion because there were an awful lot of people from the community who didn't know others were also former Vaughan pupils.

"We had the school council and some year seven children meeting and greeting and taking people around.

"We had some really positive feedback from members of the public on how well the children had carried out their tasks and how enthusiastic about the school they were."

A company took an aerial photograph, with the children forming the figure '100' on the play-ground and, also on Thursday, pupils later released 100 grey and burgundy balloons - the school's colours.

During the last few weeks, one room has been converted into a temporary museum containing artefacts such as punishment logs, photographs and old items of unfiorm that had been donated by former pupils.

Mrs Rundle said: "On Friday we had a tea party all afternoon so the children made their sandwiches and cakes and prepared their party food in the morning and we laid eight long tables in the middle school playground.

"They all had a piece of cake that was in the shape of '100'."

She added: "I would like to thank, on the behalf of the governing body, everybody who worked hard to make the week such a success."
