An historic Hanworth church said to date back to Saxon times is set for a £200,000 facelift.

Urgent restoration work to the crumbling roof of St George's, in Castle Way, is due to begin on March 1.

Daylight is visible through parts of the roof, which has had no major work done to it since being fitted in 1866, and scraps often fall onto the pews below during heavy winds.

The refurbishment is being funded thanks to a £141,000 grant from English Heritage and £50,000 from the Veolia Environmental Trust.

The church has also received smaller grants from a number of groups, while parish members have raised £10,000, although more money is needed to carry out less essential work to the rest of the building.

As well as replacing the roof on the building's chapel and its chancel, workers will install new guttering, repoint the walls and repair internal plasterwork and panels damaged by water.

The church's vicar, Father Paul Williamson, said: "St George's is often described as the 'jewel of Hanworth' and it's the oldest building for miles around. This work is essential to ensure it remains at the heart of Hanworth.

"St George's is not only a place of worship – it is an important part of our history and architectural heritage. Its preservation and repair will mean that the whole community, especially local school children, will have a focus that will connect them to Tudor and Stuart history, art, architecture and music."

There is believed to have been a church on the site since before 900 AD, from when stones still there today are said to date, although the current building was completed in 1810.

The first rector is recorded in 1293 and there is stained glass from before 1200. A total of 11 kings and queens are said to have visited the church, including Henry VIII, Charles I and Elizabeth I.

The church deteriorated badly during the second half of the last century, although the decline was arrested with the creation of the Hanworth Park Preservation Trust in 2001.
