THE closure of the splash pool at Hanworth Air Park has caused a wave of disappointment for beginner swimmers at the leisure centre.
In recent weeks, a group of women who have for some time attended the ladies evening every Tuesday, have on several occasions been turned away from using the learner pool due to lack of lifeguards.
But, the final blow came on their most recent visit when they were told the splash pool would be closed indefinitely on Tuesday evenings.
Despite £25 million invested into the local pools people are growing increasingly concerned about the state of some of the facilities across the borough.
Gina Davies, of Guildford Avenue in Feltham, said: "Standards have really slipped over the six weeks. We are not strong swimmers so we feel more confident using the smaller splash pool, which is perfect for people who want to swim within their depth.
"With £25 million invested in local pools it is clear that little or no investment has been made in Hanworth Air Park Leisure Centre pool as water is always cold there are tide marks around the edges of the pools and there are several broken tiles. It would be a real shame if the pools were allowed to decline any further."
This is just one of a number of complaints which have been made by families and regular users of pools at all five of Hounslow's pools, operated by Fusion Lifestyle, in the past year.
The main issue has repeatedly been fluctuating water temperatures which have at times developed into freezing pool conditions.
Fusion said a £9 million refurbishment of Hanworth Air Park Leisure Centre in 2010 saw improvements to the gym, changing facilities, studios, courts, crèche and café.
A Fusion Lifestyle spokesman added: "On a small number of occasions the pool has had to be closed at short notice due to unforeseen circumstances and in the interests of the health and safety of visitors.
"Customers may have been mistakenly told by the front-of-house team that closures were due to due to lack of lifeguards, however this is incorrect.
"The management apologise for any misunderstandings this has caused and will ensure that all front of house staff are fully and accurately briefed on any closures in future.
"Temperature, cleanliness and health and safety of our pools are regularly monitored and adhere to strict guidelines.
"The temperature is consistently between 28 and 31 degrees to maintain water quality and comfort for the majority of swimmers, this is logged on an hourly basis and we have not had any indication that the temperature has fallen below this level.
"All our pools have scheduled closures for cleaning and maintenance, this ensures that tide marks are regularly removed. There are a very small number of broken tiles in the pool, which does not impact on customer safety or operation of the pools."
Fusion added customer complaints are taken seriously and aim to reply within 48 hours.
