Rival candidates for the bitterly contested Hammersmith seat have been blitzing the borough all day today to try to mop up vital last votes before the polls close in today's general election.
The Labour team supporting Andy Slaughter have been canvassing the disadvantaged areas and council estates which make up the party's local heartland, such as Old Oak and the Edward Woods estate in the north, the vast White City estate, the West Kensington and Gibbs Geen Estates and the Queen Caroline Estate in Hammersmith.
Tory campaigners supporting Mr Slaughter's main rival, Shaun Bailey, have been focusing on Tube stations around the north of the borough, trying to tap into the support of commuters heading home during the rush hour.
And the Liberal Democrats have been out on the streets pushing for votes for Merlene Emerson, who is standing as an MP in Hammersmith and as a councillor in her home borough of Richmond.
Both the Tories and Labour are planning to be out on the streets until the borough's 59 polling stations close at 10pm tonight.
Mr Slaughter told the Chronicle this afternoon that he had had a good reaction on the streets, with high numbers flocking to the polls early on.
He said: "What's noticeable is that the support is very solid and the turnout appears to be good so far, and that's all very encouraging.
"We will make a point of knocking on doors close to the polling station up till 9.55pm - believe or not, people do still come out at that time."
A spokesman for Mr Bailey said the Conservatives had been able to draw on an army of volunteers to help blitz Underground stations and residential streets around the constituency.
He said: "We're trying to visit as many Tube stations as possible, and we've had people coming out from everywhere to help us today.
"There's no real way to know for certain how it's gone till the results come in tonight, but we've certainly been encouraged.
"We've always known this is going to be close and we suspect that will be the case. It's been a very tough campaign for all the parties, but overall the team is feeling cautiously optimistic."
Thousands of people have already visited polling stations around the borough, including those in the Chelsea and Fulham constituency in the south, which is predicted to remain a safe Tory seat.
The Chronicle will be at the count for both constituencies at Hammersmith Town Hall from when the polls close at 10pm till our new MPs are announced in the early hours, so check back here for live updates as the results unfold.
