Almost half the children in the borough are living in poverty, according to figures released this week.

The Campaign to End Child Poverty's survey shows more than 32,990, or 47 per cent, of youngsters in Ealing are on the breadline.

The figure ranks the Queen of the Suburbs as having the 17th highest levels of child poverty in London. It is calculated by totalling the number whose parents do not work, together with families receiving the maximum child tax credit as well as working tax credit.

The worst is Tower Hamlets with 79 per cent, while Richmond-upon-Thames fares the best at 21 per cent.

Within Ealing the figures vary widely ward to ward. In Northfield it is 17 per cent while the rate is one in six in Northolt West End, the poorest of the 23 wards.

It is this deprivation which led to the introduction of Sure Start eight years ago. This one-stop-shop designed to support families with under-fives is on the front line in tackling the problem.

Programme manager Kate Saunders: "I'm never surprised by the statistics, especially in Northolt West End."
