A LONELY pensioner who was struggling to come to terms with her husband's death was hit and killed by a train in an apparent suicide at Feltham train station.

Beryl White, who lived alone in Bedfont Lane, died instantly when she was hit by a busy commuter train at 5.40pm last Friday.

Neighbours said the 72-year-old had been lonely since her husband Dick died about two years ago, while notes and tributes on the Feltham platform asked: 'Why did you do it?'

One read: "Mum and nan, why? We love you so much. You are at peace now. Love Russell, Caroline, Nathan, Nicole and Bradley. We will miss you forever."

Another said: "In loving memory of a dear aunt. Your finally where you wanted to be, back with 'Dilts'. RIP love Kerry and Ashley."

A neighbour of the couple said: "I only knew them to say hello but since he passed away she seemed much more withdrawn. I would occasionally see her popping out but she was never the same after he died."

Police, an ambulance and the air ambulance were called to the scene but efforts to save Mrs White were in vain and she was pronounced dead on the scene.

The train involved was the 4.42pm Reading to Waterloo service, the line was closed until 7.05pm and severe delays to the whole South East network were felt throughout Friday evening.

Police are not treating the death as suspicious and do not believe a third party was involved, while an inquest has been opened by the Coroner and adjourned.
