A DEVELOPER is asking Ealing Council for permission to build 44 homes on the site of the closed-down Red Lion Pub in Greenford.

Clearview Homes is putting forward a scheme for the residential units made up of one, two and three bedroom apartments with private balconies overlooking a shared garden at the back.

The ‘L’ shaped form will front both The Broadway and Greenford Road. Throughout the process architects for the developer, Assael Architecture, and a team of consultants have liaised with Ealing Council.

Architect Dipa Joshi said: “We are proud to deliver a building that respects the architectural heritage of Greenford on this prominent corner of the town.”

Council leader Julian Bell said: “Obviously I do think everybody is sad that the Red Lion is gone, it is a shame and the end of an era. It was an iconic landmark for Greenford but I think we have got to look at it positively and see it as a way to develop and move forward. The new development is an opportunity to give our town centre a boost and they are trying to blend it in with the art deco and architecture on the Broadway.”

A public consultation exhibition was held in Greenford Town Hall to allow people the chance to give feedback, and the project was received with enthusiasm.

Retailers and those living nearby felt it would give a much needed lift to the area and encourage new investments, with interest in placing advanced reservations on the spot.

Particular attention has been paid to incorporate shared external space and the entire 10,000 square feet ground floor is planned to integrate retail and neighbourhood use.

The contemporary design has been influenced by surrounding buildings in Greenford which have dictated the height and size of the new corner complex.

This has been reflected in the attention to window patterns, bay widths and brick detail.

A decision on planning approval is expected by the end of July 2013.
