A mother of two has started a business providing cookery classes to children around the borough.

Kiddy Cook, set up by Bernadette Ryder, of Keats Way, Greenford, began this month and offers youngsters the chance to prepare and produce food in an informative yet fun way.

Mrs Ryder, 46, runs Cookie Tot classes for two to four-year-olds and Kiddy Cook classes for ages five to 11, mainly in Greenford but she plans to branch out around Ealing.

As well as the exploration, preparation and tasting of recipes, the sessions teach about the chemical processes involved in cooking, such as how carbon dioxide makes cake rise.

Mrs Ryder, who has a 15-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old son, said: “I have cooked with both my children and that’s partly where I got the idea from. I have always had an interest in food and decided that I could set up this new venture. I wanted something new that I could get my teeth into and could manage myself.

“I want children to enjoy the experience of cooking and show them that homemade food is better than shop-bought meals and that it doesn’t take that much time. Cooking is a skill for life and it’s sociable as well.”

Kiddy Cook helps promote healthy eating and builds confidence and independence. Mrs Ryder, who used to work in marketing, holds parties at venues including homes and schools and offers themes from teddy bear picnics to edible jewellery and kitchen science.

She will run children’s workshops at the Halal Festival in the London ExCel Centre next Friday and a Halloween-themed session on October 25 at Greenford Residents Hall in Queens Avenue.
