I AM very disappointed with my friend Malcolm Ede. Last week, he said that the Labour council must not be criticised for making cuts in council services. Instead, he blames the coalition government, which is cutting Ealing's support grant by 28 per cent.

May I remind Malcolm that the government has no option but to introduce cuts because it has to do something to clear up the financial mess left by the previous Labour government.

Does he, and others, remember the note left on the desk of the incoming Chancellor: There is no money left.

Having put the facts right, I now have to agree with Malcolm. He reckons that savings could easily be made by looking at the whole structure of the council. Savings of £3million could be made.

When are we going to be told by the council to do this? I gather that some officers are paid more than the Prime Minister and others are highly paid for doing jobs that, if they were deleted, would not be missed.

Let's see some action, and make the council let us know what it intends to do.
