A charity shop in Harrow is searching for two mystery donors after receiving its biggest cash donation ever.

The two women dropped in more than £1,000 in coins and notes inside a plastic bag to Scope, in Station Road.

Manager Kay Newell said: "When people bring in a bag you don't want to be rude and root through it in front of them, so when these two ladies came in the assistant just said thank you.

"Usually if someone gives a cash donation they tell you so we can ring it through the till, but these two ladies did not say anything."

As staff thought it contained the usual bric-a-brac, it was slung in the storeroom and it was only after the women left the shop that staff realised it was full of coins.

Mrs Newell said: "I was having a massive clearout and didn't look in the bag for a while.

"When I saw it, I thought someone had brought in a bag meant for the bank by mistake."

Staff were shocked by the generosity of the donors.

Assistant manager Caroline Sivakumaran said: "People usually give money by cheque, the most we have had is £200. This is the biggest donation I have ever seen at this shop."

Mrs Newell said she believed a donation of this size might have come from a collection at an event or religious ceremony.

She said: "It would be nice if they could come in again as they have been good enough to come in before.

"We just want to thank them and let them know the money has gone through."

The money will go towards the charity, which supports people with cerebral palsy.

Scope aims to achieve equality for disabled people and the cash will fund research and community support projects, including special schools.

The mystery benefactors were described as Asian, one was a woman in her 20s with shoulder-length brown hair, the other an older lady in her 40s or 50s.

Staff believe they could have been mother and daughter. [
