Sports lovers have been urged to head for Lampton Park and test their skills at a new brand of football which is sweeping the globe - Futsal.

Futsal - like five-a-side soccer but with smaller, less bouncy balls - is already huge in parts of Europe and South America, but has been slow to catch on in the UK.

However, Lampton Sports Centre, just up the road from Hounslow Central tube station, is home to a number of thriving girls' and boys' teams.

Luis Melville, of Brentford FC's Community Sports Trust, who leads training sessions at the venue, explained the sport's appeal.

"Because it's played with a smaller but heavier ball futsal relies on skills rather than the brute strength of the player," he said.

"Many players we admire, like Cristiano Ronaldo and Deco, learned their skills playing it when they were young."

Teams from Lampton have already competed in the FA National Junior Championships and in exhibition games prior to England futsal internationals.

Sessions, which are open to girls and boys of all ages, take place twice a week and include both training time and a game.

Liz Foster, the girls' coach, is particularly keen to recruit more girls aged from 13-16.
