FALLEN Hammersmith hero Sam Alexander was honoured at a black tie event last week, when guests raised a staggering £10,000 for charity.
Family and friends hosted a fundraising evening on Friday in memory of the marine, who was killed aged 28 after he was caught by a bomb blast in Helmand Province in May 2011, during his second tour of duty.
To raise money for Help for Heroes, an event was organised at Linden House, where the decorated soldier and Skelwith Road resident had worked while he was waiting to start his commando training.
The evening consisted of a champagne reception, buffet dinner and an auction, featuring unique prizes such as a script from My Week with Marilyn, signed by actor Eddie Redmayne, who attended Colet Court Preparatory school with Sam, a signed photo of actor Ralph Fiennes and a luxury trip along the Thames.
Sam’s mother, Serena Alexander, of Mylne Close, Upper Mall, said: “The evening went very well, we had some very positive feedback.
“The auction was great and we managed to raise more than £10,000. At the beginning of the day we actually had to turn people away because we had sold all the tickets.
“My brother said a few words about Sam and it was very moving. I would like to thank everybody who helped to organise the event and all the staff at Linden House. It was a wonderful evening.”
Marine Alexander, who is survived by wife Claire and 18-month-old son Leo, was awarded the Military Cross by the Queen in 2009 for his bravery in charging down a group of insurgents to draw fire away from an injured colleague.
Having used all the ammunition in his machine gun, he continued his assault with his 9mm pistol until that too was empty, forcing the enemy to retreat.
The evening held an extra poignancy as a number of guests were close to the award-winning war reporter and Weltje Road resident Marie Colvin, who was killed last week after a building she was sheltering in was hit by a rocket in the Syrian city of Homs.
A plaque honouring Sam is to be unveiled on Hammersmith Bridge on Tuesday, March 27.
