A GROUP of friends have come together to launch a community-run vegetable box scheme. People from Kensal Rise, Kensal Green, Willesden Green and Cricklewood have created Field to Fork, which officially starts today (Thursday).

Each week, the not-for-profit organisation will sell a selection of seasonable organic vegetables in north west London that has been selected from small, organic growing farms.

The aim of the project is to offer more affordable organic produce direct from local farmers. It has received backing from the Mayor of London and is part of a six-month food pilot.

Natasha Harris, of Blenheim Gardens, Wembley, and one of the founding members of Field to Fork Organics Co-operative, said: “I firmly believe that the existing food chain needs to be cut down to the minimum in order to improve food quality. It is a conviction shared by the other founding members of this new vegetable box scheme.”

The vegetables will come from the Thames Valley Growers, a group of organic farmers located in Oxfordshire and Wiltshire.

The Field to Fork members met through Transition Town Kensal to Kilburn, a volunteer organisation which aims to tackle the twin effect of climate change and peak oil at the local level.
