HILLINGDON Council will make its town centre car parks available free of charge for all holders of HillingdonFirst cards in the run-up to Christmas.

Residents will be able to do their Christmas shopping without the added expense of parking on the three December weekends before the festive period.

The initiative is aimed at helping residents during the recession and boosting the local economy by encouraging people to buy buy their gifts at shops in the borough.

Councillor Keith Burrows, cabinet member for planning and transportation, said: "We hope that all residents with a HillingdonFirst card will take advantage of this new initiative.

"The council recognises that many people have been affected by the recent credit crunch, and in addition to freezing council tax this year, this is part of our continued effort to help and support our residents during these difficult times."

The scheme will run on the weekends of December 5-6, 12-13 and 19-20. * To claim the free parking, you must have your HillingdonFirst card with you. For more information visit www.hillingdon.gov.uk
