A GROUP of young male street dancers are taking it back to the old school - literally.

The young men, aged between 16 and 25, are teaming up with a group of female pensioners, in a unique collaboration combining ballroom and street dance.

The women, who are more lindy hop than hip hop, foxtrotted their way to Patidar House in London Road, Wembley, last Thursday (June 3) for their fist session to teach the young street kids a thing or two about the cha cha cha.

The 'Funky Fresh and Fully Fledged' workshops are run by professional tutors who have worked with Cheryl Cole, Liberty X and Blue.

They aim to showcase their final routine at the launch of Brent Dance Month at Brent Respect 2010 festival on Sunday, July 4.

The street and hip hop part of the workshops is led by Taofeeq Sanusi, known as Taz, who began teaching in 1999 with a group called Hypnotick.

The dancer, choreographer, mentor and director has worked with children, young people, amateurs, semi-professionals and professionals in projects ranging from schools workshops, music video performances, theatre productions and concerts.

Professional dancer and choreographer, Sibylle Kockjeu, teaches ballroom and is also part of the Hypnotick family with many years of teaching experience.

Tekla Galova, project manager, said: "It is a beautiful idea and it is not just about dance.

"I love the idea of two different generations, different backgrounds coming together, learning from each other and working towards something positive. The first session was amazing.

"The youngest person in the room was 18 and the oldest was 84. I was so proud of them."

More dance sessions will be taking place on June 13, 20, 27 from 1.30pm-4pm and July 3, from 12pm-2pm at Patidar House, in London Road, Wembley.

Miss Galova said: "The participants need to not only learn two different dance styles but also work alongside a totally different generation. We are going to support them as much as we can. But we know this is going to be a very challenging task."
