AT least 14 people were affected by the highly contagious Norovirus, known as the winter bug, at Northwick Park Hospital.

Fourwards - Evelyn, an orthopaedic trauma recovery ward on floor five, Fielding, an elderly care ward on floor six, Gaskell, a ward on the seventh level, and James, a ninth floor diabetes and endocrinology ward - accounting for 82 beds were shut off on Friday at the 500-bed hospital in Watford Road, Harrow.

Fourteen patients contracted the virus, which causes diarrhoea and vomiting, while there were a further two suspected victims.

Aspokeswoman for The North West London Hospitals NHS Trust said on Monday: "The situation has greatly improved since the weekend. The only ward that is still closed to new admissions is James ward.

"In order to stop the spread of the infection around the hospital patients are being cared for in their own bed and not moved.

"Wardareas that contain patients with the infection are closed to new admissions and stringent infection control procedures are taken by all staff.

"Ward areas that havenow re-opened, which includes Evelyn ward, have been deep cleaned following our standard infection control procedure, which means waiting for all patients in the area to be symptom free for 72 hours prior to the clean.

"We are still requesting that only one nominated family member or carer visits patients in the affected areas."
