A FORMER pub landlord has been fined over £16,000 for serious breaches of fire safety.

Bhupinder Singh Mann former landlord of The Star pub in Uxbridge Road Hillingdon admitted guilt of 16 contraventions and was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court on Friday.

He was prosecuted by the Fire Brigade after officers discovered strict fire safety rules at The Star pub were not being observed after it failed an inspection in 2008.

Officers discovered a number of fire safety failings including NO fire extinguishers, NO emergency signage, and NO fire risk assessment.

When officers returned subsequently they found their enforcement notice had not been acted upon.

As a result a prohibition notice was served banning staff and guests from the upper floors of the pub as the risk to people from fire was was serious.

A further visit confirmed the upstairs property was still being used as accommodation and following a further inspection physically barred access to be upper floors.

London Fire Brigade’s Assistant Commissioner for Fire Safety Regulation, Steve Turek, said: "Ensuring you know about fire safety law is not an option - if you are the person responsible for a premises it is a necessity. If people do not adhere to the legislation, then as shown in this case, we can prosecute."
