NEIGHBOURS have backed down in their battle to stop nearby floodlights being used late in the evening for sports as some believe it is deterring burglars.

A dispute has been resolved over objections to an application made by The Hive Football Centre in Camrose Avenue, Edgware, to extend the use of the floodlights on its pitches for an extra half an hour when evening football matches are played.

In the officers’ report ahead of a Harrow Council planning meeting on Wednesday last week, it said householders in most of the neighbouring streets were consulted and the summary of the response was: “The floodlighting and associated noise affects neighbours sleep patterns and health.”

However, chairman of the meeting, councillor Keith Ferry, said: “I have been told that the objecting residents are quite happy about the light shining into the back of their home, it is apparently reducing the amount of burglaries.”

External lighting was extended until 11pm.
